Jacqueline Mitchard lived a literary fairy tale in that her first novel, The Deep End of the Ocean was the very first Oprah Book Club pick. This catapulted the Wisconsin-based author into immediate and huge success and she has published a number of subsequent novels, essays, and articles.
A Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article details what Ms. Mitchard has been up to lately, and it's not all happily-ever-after. She lost much of her savings in a Ponzi scheme and has had to retrench and reassess much of her life after a huge financial loss.
Some people, she says, have told her she shouldn't be so public about her loss.
"I wasn't ashamed," she says. "Would you be if you were mugged?"
So now, she starts over. A new book is due out in the spring, "The Girl Who Had No Face."
"I have income from some of my books," she says. "I hustle, I hustle like crazy. I apply for jobs. One company called me and said someone posing as me applied for a job."
Of course, she was the applicant, a best-selling author on a job hunt.
