What kind of reading are you planning for the summer? Right now, I'm working my way through Shantaram, a big, huge novel by Gregory David Roberts. Shantaram recounts the real-life adventures of Roberts himself--his prison break in Australia, his arrival in India with a fake New Zealand passport, his subsequent adventures in and out of trouble in India
Roberts' prose throbs with his love of India, its people, its culture, its color, and its darkness. It's vibrantly written--a vicarious journey through the subcontinent for those of us who may never be fortunate enough to actually visit there.
This book has been reviewed favorably in a number of places, notably in The New York Times.
