Kids Lit has a post about Drop Everything and Read, which will be held this year on April 12. DEAR had been a a national program for some years now, emphasizing the importance of family reading and encouraging families to make time to read every day.
This year's program stars the works of author Beverly Cleary, who wrote such kid-gems as the Ramona Quimby series, the Henry Huggins books, books about Ralph S. Mouse, and more, and more. Ms. Cleary turns 90 this year and the program includes a big celebration of her birthday.
If you've never had the fun of reading of Beverly Cleary's books, what are you waiting for? They are perfect for sharing with al the little folks at your house, and parents will enjoy them too. I still recall having difficulty keeping the tears of laughter at bay so that I could actually read the Ramona books with my kids.
The Drop Everything and Read website includes a fine booklist, with recommendations for kids of all ages.
