Fans of The Red Tent, and there are loads and loads of them, will be pleased to see a new book by Anita Diamant called The Last Days of Dogtown. The Red Tent was so hugely popular, especially with reading groups, and early indications are that this new novel is a winner.
If you were disappointed in Good Harbor, Ms. Diamant's last novel, you'll be pleased to see that with Dogtown, she returns to the historical fiction turf which served her so well in The Red Tent.
The story is set in nineteenth century Cape Ann, in Massachusetts, and revolves around a dwindling group of misfits and castaways. This new novel doesn't offer happy endings, but using "shifting perspectives among the various residents (including the settlement's dogs, who provide comfort to the lonely), Diamant brings the period alive with domestic details and movingly evokes the surprising bonds the outcasts form in their dying days." Publication date for The Last Days of Dogtown is August 30.
