Did you know that this is Banned Books Week? The American Library Association "celebrates" every year in honor of freedom of the press and freedom to read. Unfortunately there are always those among us who, for one reason or another, would like to curtail those rights.
It seems apropos to call attention to the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of "Lolita", by Vladimir Nabokov, a book which is usually at or near the top of most lists of best novels ever. The plot, which has been made into at least two movies, concerns a middle aged man who becomes obsessed with a very young girl.
This is a book which has always had its share of detractors. Its original publisher was convinced of the book's worth but was very nervous indeed as publication neared. Fortunately for readers everywhere, the book was published and it continues to enjoy great success. Here's an article marking the anniversary of this great novel.
