June 29 is the 105th anniversary of the birth of author Antoine de Saint-Exupery. Best known in the United States for his poetic book, The Little Prince, he was and remains a greatly esteemed personage in his native France. St. Exupery was an early aviator, particularly known for his pioneering work in establishing international postal flights.
In World War II, he engaged in daring reconnaissance work for the Allies, until his plane disappeared on a mission on July 31, 1944. In recent years, the remains of his aircraft have been found, causing a sensation in France which might be equalled in the United States were Amelia Earhart's plane to be found and authenticated.
St. Exupery's lore and accomplishment extends far beyond the children's book for which he is known in the United States.
