When I was a newbie Wisconsinite, many years ago, I was totally flummoxed by what appeared to my naive Pennsylvanian eyes as just collections of letters that seemed to be used as street names in Milwaukee. Kinnickinnic, Menomonee... Total incomprehension to me. Then I met a friend from a place called Oconomowoc and I knew for sure that as far as place names are concerned, Wisconsin is a most unusual place.
Many years in, names like Oconomowoc trip easily off my tongue, but I still confess to being intimidated by Chequamegon.
